The Common Feature of Directional Couplers

Directional couplers are most commonly made using two coupled transmission lines—placed close enough together so that when energy travels through one, it couples to the other. This method is widely used at microwave frequencies, where transmission line designs are often employed to make many circuit components.

However, at lower frequencies (such as the audio frequencies used in telephone systems), directional couplers can also be made with lumped components. Additionally, at microwave frequencies—especially the higher bands—waveguide designs can be used. Many of these waveguide couplers work on principles similar to some conductive transmission line designs, but there are also types that are unique to waveguides.
Directional couplers and power dividers have a wide range of uses, including:
  • Providing signal samples for measurement or monitoring;

  • Enabling signal feedback;

  • Combining transmit and receive signals for antennas;

  • Achieving antenna beam forming;

  • Providing taps for cable distribution systems (e.g., cable TV);

  • Separating transmitted and received signals on telephone lines.

 FOR EXAMPLE :
